Countdown is about the Cuban missile crisis. It's interesting because right now it's not that serious but I can still apply that to my life. It really shows how scared America was and how paranoid the public was. I learned the drills were in the schools. I asked my dad about it and he told me it was normal for some people to have shelters out back. They show a map of how far it is from major cities from the launch pad. I saw Chicago and its only one thousand miles which is far but for a missile not very long. It's so exciting and very scary. I would never have wanted to live back then.

Well, it was a terrifying time. I remember getting a tour of a bomb shelter in the basement of the police station in the town I grew up in. Crackers and hard candy - yeah, that would work.
ReplyDeleteThere was this film that I saw a million years ago called "Matinee" about a schlocky director of cheesy horror films opening a film in FLA called "Mant" about a mutant half man/half ant - set with the Cuban Missile Crisis as context and laughing (nicely and with a clear affection) at our fear of science run amok. Your description of the book made me think about that film - I should see if it's on Netflix -
